Close up dolly shot from the front of character walking. In the background ambient sound is playing.
This signals to the viewer that nothing significant is happening at the
moment.
|
I want the audience to get emotionally involved with the character
right from the start and to pay attention to detail. This establishes that
this is the main character.

Medium shot of character sitting on swing, then cutting to a close up
shot of the character getting the phone out of his pocket, and an extreme
close up shot of his phone displaying the text messages. I sequenced these
shots together as it gives the viewer different perspectives important detail
and focusses on what the viewer will naturally be looking at. A phone text
message sound effect plays. This notifies to the audience that the character
has just received a text message.
|
The preferred reading for the audience is for them to understand that
the character has just received a text message, and that this text message is
significant to the plot. I conformed to conventions by using a traditional
text message sound effect so its easily identifiable to the audience.

As the character looks at the text message the none diegetic
background noise stops and there is a high pitch violin screech. It then
changes to non diegetic creepy violin music. This signals to the audience
that there has been a change it atmosphere and something is about to happen.
There is a close up shot of the phone so the audience can read the text
messages, it then cuts to a medium shot of the character looking around.
Medium shots concentrate on body language and I want the audience to see the
character looking around. It then cuts to an over the shoulder shot of the
killer watching from behind a tree and you can see the character looking
around. I chose an over the shoulder shot as it creates a sense of mystery,
giving the viewer a scared uncomfortable feeling.
|
The preferred reading for this text is that I want the viewer to feel
scared and uncomfortable as the horror element of this movie starts to take
place. I want the audience to understand that this character has bad
intentions, not good.

There is a medium shot dolly of the character with the killer
approaching behind. It then cuts to a behind the shoulder shot from the killer’s
perspective. This gives the audience two points of view and shows that the
killer is creeping up on him
|
The preferred reading of this is that the audience gets a scared
feeling and understands that the killer is creeping up on the character to do
bad intentions and not good. This is conforming to horror conventions to help
the audience to understand the preferred reading.

There is a medium hand held dolly shot of the character running
through the woods while intense chase music is playing. I chose intense chase
music as it signals to the audience this is the climax of the movie and where
they need to pay the most attention. It then cuts to a slow-motion medium
shot of the character tripping and falling. This is conforming to stereotypical
horror conventions as the main character always falls over in a chase scene. Despite
that this is a common feature of horror movies and is very predictable, it
still puts the viewer on the edge of their seat and makes them wonder if he’s
going to get up or if the killer will catch him. It then cuts to a medium/long
shot in slow motion of the killer running towards the camera. This further emphasises
the intense moment along with the slow motion, which drags it out and adds an
added dramatic effect.
|
The preferred reading is that the audience understands that the
killer is chasing him to kill him and that this is a chase scene. I conformed to conventions of dramatic chase
music to play in the background so it makes It easier for the audience to
establish this where as if happy joyful music was playing, the audience may
get confused and not get the preferred reading.

There is a long shot of the character running into the road. It then
cuts to a medium shot of the car heading towards the camera with screeching tire
sound effect in the background which then cuts to a close up/medium shot of
the camera moving towards the character which then shouts ‘Oh Fuck!” it then
cuts to a long shot of the car which then quickly cuts to a white screen with
car crash sound effects in the back ground. After a few seconds it then cuts
to the character falling to the ground in slow motion, which then cuts to a
close up of his hand lied on the ground. I chose to edit it this was to give
the impression that the character had been hit by a car rather than using
stunt doubles, special effects and road blocks. IT would be very exspensive
and time consuming where you can achieve the same effect will careful and
smart editing
|
It’s important that even though the audience can’t see it, that the
character has been hit by a car. They establish this by seeing the shots
before hands and then the white screen and car crash sound effects. This
signals to the audience he had been hit which is then further emphasised by
the shot of him falling an this hand on the ground. His hand being laid out n
the ground symbolises he is dead. It’s risky that the audience may not
understand this as you can’t actually see it, you can only hear it. However,
using this editing technique saved a lot of time and effort.
